Five tactics that win club matches

Watch any club match and you'll see rallies decided less by winners than by choices. These five patterns cost nothing to learn and decide most points below the pro level.

1. The net wins the match

The pair at the net wins the clear majority of points, at every level. Every plan should end with 'and then we take the net': serve and come in, chiquita and come in, lob them off and come in. If you only track one thing per match, track who owns the net.

2. The lob is your reset button

Pinned in defense? A high, deep, diagonal lob turns the point around: the net changes hands and the rally restarts on your terms. Diagonal matters — it's the longest flight path, which buys margin over their smash and time for your feet.

3. The middle beats the corners

The spectacular shot aims for the corner; the winning shot usually aims through the middle. It offers no angles for a counter, it's the longest court, and it makes two opponents look at each other. Corners are for sitters — the middle is for everything else.

4. Speed is a height decision

Accelerate when your contact point is above net height; stay patient below it. Speeding up from your shoelaces means hitting upward into ready volleys — their favorite food. This single filter removes half of a club player's unforced errors.

5. Big points, boring padel

On golden points and break points, play the pattern you've hit a hundred times: reliable serve, deep return, lob when in doubt, finish through the middle. Pressure shrinks new tricks — habits survive it. Save the surprises for 40-0.

Train the reflex

Knowing these five is step one; choosing them at speed, under a ticking clock, is the skill. That's precisely what the TheoryPadel scenarios drill — one decision at a time.
